The European MEVAC project was successfully completed and brings Romania an international-level air medical infrastructure, through the acquisition of mobile intensive care modules, compatible with the aircraft of the Ministry of National Defense.
The new systems transform C-27J Spartan aircraft into true airborne ICUs, allowing the simultaneous transport of up to four critically ill patients, with the same level of care as in a hospital. Integrated equipment – stretchers, ventilators, monitors, injection machines and oxygen cylinders fixed in dedicated compartments – eliminates the preparation times and risks associated with transporting equipment improvisedly.
The implementation of the MEVAC system represents an important step towards increasing the safety of citizens and strengthening European cooperation in the field of civil protection and emergency medical assistance.
A major advantage is the speed of operationalization: from the moment the alarm is raised, the aircraft can be ready for flight in about 30 minutes, and the assembly of the module itself takes only a few minutes. This shortens the transfer time of patients by almost two hours, increasing the chances of survival in critical cases such as severe burns or road accidents.
The project, with a total value of almost one million euros (75% financed by non-reimbursable European funds), includes not only technical equipment, but also the training of medical and military personnel through practical sessions and training exercises.
In addition to national use, Romania will make these modules available to the European Civil Protection Mechanism, thus contributing to the European Union’s rapid response capacity in crisis situations.
